How to Take the Test Part II Academic Support Center Phyllis Zahnd, Ph.D Bishara Al-Akeel, MSEE Judy Marano, MST Multiple Choice True and False Short Answer fill-in Essay Reading Comprehension Oral Open Book Types of Tests Read the question before you look at the answers. Come up with an answer in your head and then find the one that most closely matches your choice. Eliminate answers you know are wrong. Read ALL the choices before choosing your answer. Don’t keep changing your mind. The first answer is usually the best answer. Choose “all of the above” ONLY when every choice is correct. Choose “none of the above” ONLY when every choice is incorrect. Multiple Choice Usually there are more true answers than false answers on most tests. Pay attention to qualifiers: “usually,” “sometimes,” and “generally” mean that the statement can be considered true or false depending on the circumstances. These type of qualifiers often lead to a “true” answer. If any part of the statement is false, then the entire statement is false. True and False Test Short answer tests require that you write a word, phrase or brief statement. The answer is not provided. You must recall it and fill in the answer. Try not to leave an answer blank. Show your work and possibly get partial credit. If you don’t know the answer, skip it and go back later. Other parts of the test may give you clues to the answer. Read the questions carefully and make sure that you answer everything it asks for. Some short answer questions have multiple parts. Short Answers Read the directions carefully. Underline key words. Are you asked to give examples, state a point of view, etc. Make sure you understand what the question is asking you. If not, ask your instructor. Identify the type of essay: - Compare/contrast - Opinion - Descriptive - Cause and Effect - Process - Narrative - Persuasive Essay Test Make brief notes for each essay question. Select the question that you have the most to say about, not the question you like best. Brainstorm. Make an outline before writing. The time spent in the planning stage will save you time at the end. Don’t write long introductions and conclusions. Spend time on the body paragraphs. Focus on 1 main idea for each paragraph. Provide supporting details and examples. Proofread!!!!! If you make a mistake, draw a line through it and correct it. It is much neater than erasing. More about the Essay Test Read the title. Preview for anything in bold print. Then read the questions. Do this BEFORE you read the article. Reading Comprehension Find out what the topic is and whether or not you can bring props or visuals. Dress appropriately. Practice in front of a mirror so that you can see your body language. If using a computer, try it out first to be sure everything works. Do not read off the computer, blackboard or notes. These things should enhance your presentation not BE your presentation. Maintain good eye contact and posture. Don’t lean! Don’t move around excessively! Speak S-L-O-W-L-Y with appropriate vocabulary. Oral Test Spend equal or greater time preparing for this test. It will most likely be harder than a normal test.
