What
is
memory?
Two
kinds
of
memory:
Short
term
memory
–
information
is
fragile.
Long
term
memory
–
information
is
personally
meaningful,
important
and/or
has
emotional
impact.
Retrieval
–
use
information,
connect
information
to
other
facts.
College
Students
It
is
useful
to
think
about
memory
this
way
too:
General
memory
–
paraphrase,
learn
concepts
Verbatim
memory
–
remember
exactly,
memorize
Four
“R’s”
of
Remembering
Resolve
–
pay
attention
and
decide
to
remember.
React
–
be
an
active
learner
and
get
involved
with
the
material.
Relate
–
be
an
active
leaner
and
make
connections.
Review
–
immediately
and
at
regular
intervals.
Match
the
Technique
with
the
Material
Different
subjects
require
different
techniques
Know
your
learning
style.
Combine
different
modalities.
What
techniques
work
for
you?
What
techniques
seldom
work
for
you?
Memory
Technique:
Repetition
Repetition
is
most
useful
for
information
that
is
not
very
detailed.
READ
the
information
out
loud.
Look
away,
close
your
eyes,
talk
into
the
mirror.
REPEAT
the
information.
WRITE
the
information
from
memory.
Repeat
these
steps
at
least
3
times
or
until
you
can
remember
the
information.
Memory
Technique:
Mnemonics
Mnemonics
is
another
way
to
remember
information
that
is
more
detailed
Acronyms
are
words
formed
by
using
the
first
letters
of
the
information
to
be
remembered.
HOMES
–
Great
Lakes:
Huron,
Ontario,
Michigan,
Erie
&
Superior
BAR
–
Britain,
America,
Russia
Acronymic
Sentences
are
formed
by
using
the
first
letter
of
each
word
to
be
remembered.
Very
Active
Cat
–
Blood
vessels:
Veins,
Arteries
&
Capillaries
Memory
Technique:
Rhymes
Rhymes
“i”
before
“e”
except
after
“c”
will
help
you
to
spell
“receive”
and
“belief”
correctly.
Poems
and
Songs
Memory
Technique:
Visuals
Graphs
and
charts
may
give
a
visual
picture
of
information
that
has
more
clarity
than
words.
Visualization
is
a
technique
that
people
use
to
create
strong
visual
images.
People
who
are
visual
learners
are
especially
good
using
this
method.
