Solving Equations using Addition and Subtraction Things to remember about solving equations: The goal in solving equations is to undo the equation-get the variable by itself. Addition and Subtraction “undo” each other- they cancel each other out. Whatever you do to one side of the equation, you must do to the other side. All work must be shown. Example #1 Solve each equation. SHOW ALL WORK! h - 12 =-27 +12 +12 h = -15 k + 63 = 92 - 63 - 63 k = 29 c + 102 = 36 -102 -102 c = -66 y 4/5 = 2/3 y 12/15 = 10/15 + 12/15 +12/15 y = 22/15 y = 1 7/15 x (-6) = 54 x + 6 = 54 -6 -6 x = 48 -18 = w + (-12) +12 +12 -6 = w g. 19 = k (-25) 19 = k + 25 -25 -25 -6 = k Example #2 write an equation for each sentence, and then solve the equation. SHOW ALL WORK! Fourteen more than a number is equal to twenty-seven. 14 + n = 27 -14 -14 n = 13 Twenty-five is 3 less than a number. 25 = n 3 +3 +3 28 = n
