Welcome to a tour of Oral Radiology a 2011 Blackboard Catalyst award-winning
course. I am Dr. Leslie Koberna. This is a three credit
hour junior level hybrid course from the Dental Hygiene Department at
Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. This tour will show you the following areas:
start here, practice blackboard tasks, course
syllabus and course information, policies and requirements, and modules. The start here button links to the student
introduction assignment and a course tour. For the introduction assignment, the students
will post a picture and answer questions on
the course wiki. The course tour link helps students become
familiar with the parts of the course they will
need to get started. For this course they are directed to the
syllabus and then to the link with their first
assignment. They are then introduced to the module button
and the contents of each module is explained. In addition, the students are told how to use
the questions and answer discussion board
and how to access the gradebook. The Practice Blackboard Tasks button contains
a practice task for each of the different Bb
functions students will use during the course. For this course students will practice sending
me an email through Bb, posting an initial entry and a response to the
discussion board, submitting an assignment using the
assignment link where they will both copy and
paste and attach an assignment, and taking a quiz. The syllabus and course information link
contains a printable copy of the syllabus, a copy of the course schedule, and easy access to the sections of the
syllabus. The section on policies and requirements
contains links to policies on communication,
grading, and technology. In addition there are course navigation
instructions, tips on how to get organized for
the course, and links to student resources available at the
University. The module link contains the modules for
each course session. Each module has the reading assignment, the
module plan (this is an overview or a check-off
list for the students to follow), the module objectives and a list of the activities
that will be used to accomplish the objectives, a worksheet based on the objectives, Three five-question quizzes based on the
objectives, video clips and practice activities, [background voice of how to position the x-ray
film from example video] and a PowerPoint presentation. I usually give
students a copy of the PowerPoint
presentation from the text even if I don’t use it. The course meets twice a week. There is one
module for each class session. The students are expected to read the
material, complete the worksheet, take the
quizzes, and view the videos prior to class. Completion of these activities is counted as an
activity grade. When students arrive at class they take a five-
question quiz and there are class activities to help them
understand the material for the session. In addition there are three exams and a final. I hope you have enjoyed your class tour.
