Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.". John 8:50,51 At this the Jews exclaimed, "Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. John 8:52 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?" John 8:53 Jesus replied, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. John 8:54 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. John 8:55 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad." John 8:56,57 "You are not yet fifty years old," the Jews said to him, "and you have seen Abraham!" Romans 4:18-22 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead--since he was about a hundred years old--and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Romans 4:18-22 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness." Luke 16:19-23 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. Luke 16:19-23 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!" John 8:58 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?“ Exodus 3:13 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.'" Exodus 3:14 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds. John 8:59 The MYSTERY of SIGHT Matthew 13:10-15 The disciples came to him and asked, "Why do you speak to the people in parables?" He replied, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Matthew 13:10-15 Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. This is why I speak to them in parables: "Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: Matthew 13:10-15 "'You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving. For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.' Physically Blind Eye doesn’t work No light Light is blocked Light is not present Spiritually Blind Spiritual Eye doesn’t see No Spiritual light Light is blocked Light is not present John 9:1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. John 9:2 His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" John 9:34 To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out. John 9:3 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. Biblical Explanations for Suffering Living in a Fallen World Rejection of Christ & His followers by a Fallen World Personal Sin Sins of Others Satan God Why is God punishing me? God Get our attention Personal Growth Keep us humble Comfort others in like circumstances Bring Glory to God Work His Will John 9:4,5 Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." John 9:6,7a Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). Old Jerusalem City of David David’s Jerusalem (2 Sam 5:6-9) Mt. John 9:7b John 9:8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?" John 9:11 He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see." When you don’t know what to say, tell them what Jesus has done for you! John 9:12 "Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said. John 9:13,14 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath. John 9:15 Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see." John 9:16 Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided. John 9:17a Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened." John 9:17b The man replied, "He is a prophet." John 9:18,19 The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents. "Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?" John 9:20-21 "We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind. But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." John 9:22 His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. What are you clinging to that prevents you from telling others about Jesus? John 9:24,25 A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God, " they said. "We know this man is a sinner." He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" John 9:26,27 Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?“ John 9:28,29 Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from." John 9:30-33 The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. John 9:30-33 Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." Mark 13:11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 1 Pet 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, John 9:34 To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out. John 9:35 Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" Daniel 7:13 In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. Rev 4&5 Mat 24:30 “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. Revelation 5:6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. Revelation 5:7 He came and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. Daniel 7:14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed. John 9:36 "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him." John 9:37 Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you." I who speak to you am he! I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. John 9:38 Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18 John 9:39 Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind." Isaiah 42:5-7 This is what God the LORD says-- he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: "I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. John 9:40 Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, "What? Are we blind too?" John 9:41 Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains. Who do you know that needs to SEE JESUS!
