JOHN the Apostle’s spiritual journey to recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with His Own (13-20) Epilogue (21) Gospel of John PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Outline of John Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Calling Disciples (1:19-2:11) The Temple and Nicodemus (2:12-3:21) An interlude in Judea (3:22-36) The Samaritan woman & the nobleman (4) The man at the pool of Bethesda (5) Feeding the multitude (6) Confrontation in Jerusalem (7-8) The blind man and the shepherd's sheep (9-10) The raising of Lazarus (11:1-54) Preparations for the Passover (11:55-12:50) John 4:4,5 Now he HAD to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Galilee 10 20 miles 0 Night Noon Leader Outcast Pharisee Samaritan Rich Poor Man Woman Bible Scholar Confused Both One on One with Jesus John 4:6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) Will you give me a drink? I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. I who speak to you am he! John 4:34,35 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Galilee John 4:46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 10 20 miles 0 Galilee John 4:49,50 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 10 20 miles 0 John 4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." Galilee John 4:49,50 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 10 20 miles 0 John 4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." John 4:51,52 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee. Sign #2 “Do whatever He tells you” He took Jesus at His Word John 5:1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews Galilee John 5:2-5 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, Sheep Gate John 5:2-5 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. Sheep Gate Pool of Bethesda (house of kindness) 1 2 3 4 5 John 5:3-5 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. Pool of Bethesda (house of kindness) Nehemiah’s Jerusalem Jesus’ Jerusalem Pool of Bethesda Pool of Siloam St. Anne’s Church Ruins over Bethesda Pool John 5:1-15 The Problem of Suffering One of the most common objections to believing in a loving God… 1 Pet 3:15 calls us to have a “ready defense” for our hope… Therefore, as believers, we are called on to have some understanding of how to scripturally deal with the problem of suffering If God is supposedly… All Loving All-Seeing All-Powerful All-Righteous Yet sin, suffering and death exist… Then God either… Doesn’t know Doesn’t care Can’t do anything Or He doesn’t exist “the Lord our God is holy” (Ps. 99:9) "God is love“ (1 John 4:8,16) Phil 2:6-8 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! Who is the God of the Bible? God is the Holy Being who is love in servant form God is… A Being who is Holy Loving Serving A Loving Being needs an object of that love… Therefore God created man I love you I love you I love you Instead God created man with a free will to: Choose Him or Ignore Him Knowing man’s choice would be to reject Him And knowing this rejection would result in man living in a fallen world And knowing His Son would have to die to reconcile sinful man to a Holy God For God, all the suffering of a fallen world and the death of His Son is worth having some people who can love Him forever of their own free will! For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Biblical Explanations for Suffering Living in a Fallen World Rejection of Christ by a Fallen World Personal Sin Sins of Others Satan God Genesis 3:17-19 To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Living in a Fallen World Living in a Fallen World Romans 8:20-22 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Luke 13:4-5 “Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them— do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” Living in a Fallen World Rejection of Christ by a Fallen World John 15:20-1 Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me. Rejection of Christ by a Fallen World 1 Peter 4:13-14 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 1 Pet 4:12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. Personal Sin Gen 6:5-7a The LORD saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The LORD was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain. So the LORD said, "I will wipe mankind, whom I have created, from the face of the earth-- 1 Cor 11:27-30 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. Personal Sin 1 Pet 4:15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. Personal Sin Acts 12:21-23 On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not of a man.” Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died. Personal Sin Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." Sins of others Exo 20:4-5 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, Ezra 9:7 From the days of our forefathers until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword and captivity, to pillage and humiliation at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today. Sins of others Satan Mark 5:8-9 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!“ Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many."
