of John The Gospel Rick Erickson,MD Temple Bible Church Chapter 7:1-53 Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with His Own (13-20) Epilogue (21) Gospel of John PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Outline of John Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Calling Disciples (1:19-2:11) The Temple and Nicodemus (2:12-3:21) An interlude in Judea (3:22-36) The Samaritan woman & the nobleman (4) The man at the pool of Bethesda (5) Feeding the multitude (6) Confrontation in Jerusalem (7-8) The blind man and the shepherd's sheep (9-10) The raising of Lazarus (11:1-54) Preparations for the Passover (11:55-12:50) Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. Physical birth to spiritual rebirth John 4:6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) Will you give me a drink? John 6:53-56 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:59-60 He said this while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. Yet there are some of you who do not believe. This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. John 6:64 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. John 6:66 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. John 6:67 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God." John 6:68,69 Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!" (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.) John 6:70,71 JOHN the Apostle’s spiritual journey to recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. You have to decide! Nazareth Jerusalem Galilee John 7:4,5 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." For even his own brothers did not believe in him. Nazareth Jerusalem The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil. You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come." But when the right time came, the time God decided on, he sent his Son, born of a woman, Galatians 4:4-5 TLB born as a Jew, to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so that he could adopt us as his very own sons. John 7:9,10 Having said this, he stayed in Galilee. However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. What People thought of Jesus John 7 His brothers Their big brother Too close to know Him Not until halfway through the Feast did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. John 7:14 The Jews were amazed and asked, "How did this man get such learning without having studied?" John 7:15 My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me. If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?" "You are demon-possessed," the crowd answered. "Who is trying to kill you?" John 7:20 I can’t believe that you guys are still fixated on my healing someone on the Sabbath! Get over it! I did one miracle, and you are all astonished. Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a child on the Sabbath. Now if a child can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing the whole man on the Sabbath? Stop judging by mere appearances, and make a right judgment. At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, "Isn't this the man they are trying to kill? John 7:25 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? John 7:26 But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from. John 7:27 Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, but I know him because I am from him and he sent me. At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. John 7:30 Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, "When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man?" John 7:31 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. John 7:32 I am with you for only a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me.You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come. The Jews said to one another, "Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? John 7:35 What did he mean when he said, 'You will look for me, but you will not find me,' and' Where I am, you cannot come'?" John 7:36 If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. On the last and greatest day of the Feast… John 7:40-53 On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet." Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. John 7:40-53 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?" "No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared. "You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them.“ John 7:40-53 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, "Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?" They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee." Then each went to his own home. And each had to personally decide who they thought Jesus was… What People thought of Jesus John 7 His brothers “The Jews” Their big brother A dangerous liar and blasphemer Too close to know Him Too blind to know Him What People thought of Jesus John 7 His brothers “The Jews” The “mobs” Their big brother A dangerous liar and blasphemer A good man A deceiver Demon- possessed Paranoid A prophet The Christ Too close to know Him Too blind to know Him Too little knowledge to know Him Who do you know that is… too close to know Him too blind to know Him too little knowledge to know Him What are you going to do about it?
