of John The Gospel Rick Erickson,MD Temple Bible Church Chapter 4:1-54 JOHN the Apostle’s spiritual journey to recognizing that Jesus is the Son of God Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with His Own (13-20) Epilogue (21) Gospel of John PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Outline of John Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Calling Disciples (1:19-2:11) The Temple and Nicodemus (2:12-3:21) An interlude in Judea (3:22-36) The Samaritan woman & the nobleman (4) The man at the pool of Bethesda (5) Feeding the multitude (6) Confrontation in Jerusalem (7-8) The blind man and the shepherd's sheep (9-10) The raising of Lazarus (11:1-54) Preparations for the Passover (11:55-12:50) The Disciples’ grow in Faith and Number John points out the “Lamb of God” Wedding at Cana Clearing the Temple Individuals come in different ways: Called by John the B. Called by Friends Called by Jesus Fishermen Nathanael Nicodemus Woman at the Well John 1:28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. Galilee John 2:1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Bethany (beyond the Jordan) 10 20 miles 0 Galilee John 2:13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Galilee John 3:22-23 After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized. Now John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because there was plenty of water, and people were constantly coming to be baptized. Bethany Mary, Martha, Lazarus He must become greater; I must become less. The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is from the earth belongs to the earth, and speaks as one from the earth. The one who comes from heaven is above all. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him. Night Noon Leader Outcast Pharisee Samaritan Rich Poor Man Woman Bible Scholar Confused Both One on One with Jesus Galilee John 4:1-3 The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. Samaria Judah 722 B.C. Israel’s captivity in Assyria Egypt Israel Jerusalem Babylon Ninevah Asshur Samaria Assyria Media Elam Kue Urartu Nairi Sumer Kummuhu John 4:4,5 Now he HAD to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Galilee 10 20 miles 0 Mt. Gerizim Mt. Ebal Nablus (Sychar) Events at Shechem Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12:7) Jacob stayed here (Gen 33:18) Men slaughtered by Jacob’s sons (Gen 34:25-31) Joseph buried here (Joshua 24:32) Readings of Blessings and Curses (Joshua 8:30-35) Jesus first presents Himself as Messiah (John 4:5-26) John 4:6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) Will you give me a drink? You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink? How can you get water with no pot? The water I give is not H2O Give me some so I won’t thirst! (and I won’t have to come here!) (Hmmm… why?) Bring your husband! Uh… no husband Ain’t that the truth! Heh, you’re a prophet aren’t you! If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. Heh, I’ve always wondered… why do Jews and Samaritans worship on different mountains? Your missing the point! God must be worshiped for who He really is! He’s NOT stuck on some mountain! He’s SPIRIT! I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. I who speak to you am he! John 4:27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?" John 4:28-30 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" They came out of the town and made their way toward him. John 4:31-33 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat something." But he said to them, "I have food to eat that you know nothing about." Then his disciples said to each other, "Could someone have brought him food?" John 4:34,35 "My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 8:5-6 Philip went down to a city in Samaria and proclaimed the Christ there. When the crowds heard Philip and saw the miraculous signs he did, they all paid close attention to what he said. John 4:36,37 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying 'One sows and another reaps' is true. John 4:38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor." 2,000 years of sowing! John 4:39-41 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. John 4:42 They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." He couldn’t understand But they did! Who is the Last Person on Earth that you would like to talk to about Jesus? Are you willing to be Christ-like and find a way to connect with them to tell them about Jesus? You might be surprised… They may just listen! John 4:43 After the two days he left for Galilee. Galilee John 4:44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.) Luke 4:21 and he began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." Galilee John 4:44 When he arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, for they also had been there. Galilee John 4:46 Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. 10 20 miles 0 Galilee John 4:47 When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. 10 20 miles 0 Galilee John 4:49,50 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 10 20 miles 0 John 4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." Galilee John 4:49,50 The royal official said, "Sir, come down before my child dies." Jesus replied, "You may go. Your son will live." The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 10 20 miles 0 John 4:48 "Unless you people see miraculous signs and wonders," Jesus told him, "you will never believe." John 4:51,52 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, "The fever left him yesterday at the seventh hour." John 4:51,52 Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and all his household believed. This was the second miraculous sign that Jesus performed, having come from Judea to Galilee. Sign #2 “Do whatever He tells you” He took Jesus at His Word John 5:1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews Galilee
