Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with His Own (13-20) Epilogue (21) Gospel of John PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Outline of John Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Calling Disciples (1:19-2:11) The Temple and Nicodemus (2:12-3:21) An interlude in Judea (3:22-36) The Samaritan woman & the nobleman (4) The man at the pool of Bethesda (5) Feeding the multitude (6) Confrontation in Jerusalem (7-8) The blind man and the shepherd's sheep (9-10) The raising of Lazarus (11:1-54) Preparations for the Passover (11:55-12:50) 1st “Sign” JOHN the Apostle Bethany (beyond the Jordan) Jerusalem John 1:28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing. John the Baptist John 1:19-23 They asked him, "Then who are you? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No." Finally they said, "Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?" John the Baptist John 1:19-23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, "I am the voice of one calling in the desert, 'Make straight the way for the Lord.'" John 1:32-34 Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.‘ I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." Calling the disciples John 1:35-51 John points out the “Lamb of God” Andrew follows Andrew calls Simon Simon renamed Jesus leaves for Galilee and finds Philip Philip finds Nathanael Matthew 4:18-22 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." At once they left their nets and followed him. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him. Galilee 10 20 miles 0 John 2:1-2 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. Bethany Ruins of Cana Ruins of Cana To Sea of Galilee John 2:3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, They have no more wine. Oh boy! That’s the last of the wine! Mary brings the Problem to Jesus Humanly, Jesus could do nothing to solve the Wedding dilemma Mary was asking for a miracle! She didn’t want her friends Wedding ruined She wanted her friends to know who Jesus was She wanted everyone to know who Jesus was They have no more wine. Matthew 1:18-19 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. Dear woman, why do you involve me? My time has not yet come. But when the right time came, the time God decided on, he sent his Son, born of a woman, born as a Jew, to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law so that he could adopt us as his very own sons. Galatians 4:4-5 TLB Do you bring your problems to the one who has the Power to solve it? However, do your prayers also come with proposed timing and solution(s) for the Lord? “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 John 2:6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Do whatever he tells you. Are you willing to do whatever God tells you to do? Fill the jars with water Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet H2O CH3CH2OH C C Colossians 1:16,17 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. John 2:9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now John 2:11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him. Hebrews 1:1,2 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. Jesus has authority over all creation He came at the Perfect Time (He will come again at the Perfect Time) He is the BEST God has to offer us He is worthy of your faith! Galilee 10 20 miles 0 John 2:12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. John 2:15,16 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father's house into a market! John 2:17 His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” Psalms 69:9 Is it sinful to get angry? No, but it is sin to get even! What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this? Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days! John 2:20-21 The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" But the temple he had spoken of was his body. John 2:22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. Hebrews 7:28-8:5 For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever. The point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by man.
