But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. The Upper Room Discourse Jesus’ “Love Letter” to His Own Outline of John Jesus with His Own (13-20) The Farewell Discourse (13-17) The foot washing (13:1-30) The Farewell Discourse: Part 1 (13:31-14:31) The Farewell Discourse: Part 2 (15:1-16:4) The Farewell Discourse: Part 3 (16:5-33) The high priestly prayer (17) The trial of Jesus (18:1-19:16a) The death of Jesus (19:16b-42) The resurrection of Jesus (20:1-29) Conclusion (20:30-31) Sunday The Upper Room Thursday It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. John 13:1 Thursday What did Jesus know at the Last Supper? His time had come to go to the Cross All power has been given to Him He was going to return to Father His disciples were arguing about “greatness” Judas was to betray Him within minutes His disciples were going to soon be in crisis John 13:5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. John 13:27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. "What you are about to do, do quickly," Jesus told him, Now is the son of man glorified I will be with you only a little longer Where I am going you cannot come John 13:31-33 John 13:34 "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Give them a reason for staying Tell them why it is better that you go Tell them why they can trust you I am not leaving you alone (the camp counselor will teach you and keep you company) I’m leaving you with all you need It’s better for you that I go. (I’ll clean up your room!) You know where I’m going… back home If you love me, you’ll behave yourself while I’m gone I’ll come back and take you home before you know it! If you need me, just call… Lord, where are you going? Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you! Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times! John 13:38 John 14:2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Seen Jesus = Seen the Father Advantages of Jesus leaving… I’ll be preparing a place for you You will do even greater things You can ask for anything in My Name and I’ll give it to you I’ll give you another counselor forever! 14:15 If you love me, you’ll obey what I command #1 LOVE ONE ANOTHER #2 OBEY HIS COMMANDS John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- Attributes of Holy Spirit From the Father Another Counselor With us Forever John 14:17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. Attributes of Holy Spirit From the Father Another Counselor With us Forever Truth Unknowable by the World With them (in form of Jesus) and will be in them (in form of H.S.) Will teach all things (26) Jesus = Truth Spirit = Truth Jesus = Spirit a=b & b=c then a=c Transitive property of equality John 14:18-20 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. Seen Jesus = Seen the Father I’m in Father… The Father’s in me My words = Father’s Work Proof #1 = His miracles Proof #2 = Because He Lives Jesus = Spirit Spirit = Father John 14:21 Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” #1 LOVE ONE ANOTHER #2 OBEY HIS COMMANDS LOVES JESUS + = THE FATHER LOVES JESUS THE FATHER LOVES YOU! therefore John 14:22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. #1 LOVE ONE ANOTHER #2 OBEY HIS COMMANDS LOVES JESUS + = THE FATHER LOVES JESUS THE FATHER LOVES YOU! and WE WILL COME INTO HIM Jesus = Spirit Spirit = Father Father = Jesus John 14:24,25 He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. "All this I have spoken while still with you. Jesus’ Words = Father’s Words John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Jesus’ Words = Father’s Words = Spirit’s Word That’s why He can remind you of Jesus’ Words John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. War Of The Worlds movie poster 3 World’s view of Peace God’s view of Peace John 14:28 "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. John 14:29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. Seen Jesus = Seen the Father I’m in Father… The Father’s in me My words = Father’s Work Proof #1 = His miracles Proof #2 = Because He Lives Proof # 3 = Because He told us before it happened John 14:30,31a I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. http://www.comingsoon.net/cgi-bin/imageFolio.cgi?direct=Horror/ The_Omen_666&img= omen6661.jpg What does it mean to be one of Jesus’ disciples? 14:31b "Come now; let us leave.” The Upper Room Thursday Gethsemane John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. Isaiah 5:1 I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard: My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. Isaiah 5:2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well. Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. Isaiah 5:3 “Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. 5:4 What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad? Isaiah 5:5 Now I will tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it will be destroyed; I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled. Isaiah 5:6 I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated, and briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.” Isaiah 5:7a The vineyard of the LORD Almighty is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are the garden of his delight. (Ezekiel 15:1-2) The word of the LORD came to me: "Son of man, how is the wood of a vine better than that of a branch on any of the trees in the forest? (Ezekiel 15:3) Is wood ever taken from it to make anything useful? Do they make pegs from it to hang things on? (Ezekiel 15:4) And after it is thrown on the fire as fuel and the fire burns both ends and chars the middle, is it then useful for anything? (Ezekiel 15:5) If it was not useful for anything when it was whole, how much less can it be made into something useful when the fire has burned it and it is charred? (Ezek 15:6) "Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: As I have given the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest as fuel for the fire, so will I treat the people living in Jerusalem. (Ezek 15:7) I will set my face against them. Although they have come out of the fire, the fire will yet consume them. And when I set my face against them, you will know that I am the LORD. (Ezek 15:8) I will make the land desolate because they have been unfaithful, declares the Sovereign LORD.“ So if Israel is not the True Vine, who is? John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. John 15:2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. John 15:3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. John 15:4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. John 15:5-6 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. Does this mean we could loose our salvation? Romans 8:38,39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Peter’s Response Me too? Never! Wash all of me! Jesus’ Response Yep, even Peter! Once! Sanctified living requires keeping continuous “local cleaning” http://www.gold-net.com.au/archivemagazines/apr20/85439743.html Gold Bullion - Click to Return If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 1 Corinthians 3:12,13 Are you plugged in to Jesus? Is your fan blowing on anyone?
