Outline of John The Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus Before the World (1:19-12:50) Jesus with His Own (13-20) Epilogue (21) Gospel of John PURPOSE of JOHN: John 20:31-32 Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. Raising of Lazarus 11 12-20 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?" John 11:25,26 Jesus wept "Lazarus, come out!" "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish." Man’s plan for God John 11:49-50 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, God’s plan for Man Bethany (beyond the Jordan) Jerusalem Bethany Ephraim/Ephron John 12:1,2 Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. John 12:3-5 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.” John 12:6-8 He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. "Leave her alone," Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.” John 12:12,13 The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna! " "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed is the King of Israel!" John 12:14-16 Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt." At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him. Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zechariah 9:9 John 12:17,18 Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!" John 12:19 December 7th, 1941 Unexpected Outcomes Unexpected Outcomes Unexpected Outcomes Chapter 12:20-50 20-33 God’s plan for man 20-23 “Hungry” Greek worshipers 24-33 Death brings life 34-43 Man’s response to God’s plan 44-50 The Father’s Authority behind Jesus’ Words John 12:20-21 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. Sir, we would like to see Jesus. Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, John 12:22,23 "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” + + = Pax Romana kernel hard wheat kernal germinating wheat kernal John 12:24 I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 1 “man” dies Billions saved John 12:25-26 The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. Man’s teaching = Love your life, it’s the only one you’ve got! God’s teaching = Let go of your life, it’s the only one you’ve got to give! "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!" John 12:27,28a “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again!” Then a voice came from heaven, The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him. Jesus said, "This voice was for your benefit, not mine. John 12:29,30 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. John 12:31 “But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” John 12:32 Jews Gentiles He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. John 12:33 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. Responses to the Cross Confusion Disbelief “Silent” belief The crowd spoke up, "We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this 'Son of Man'?" John 12:34 Confused person Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me ; your throne will be established forever.'" 2 Samuel 7:16 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. John 12:35 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them. John 12:36 Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: "Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" John 12:37,38 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: "He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn--and I would heal them." John 12:39,40 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. John 12:41 Isaiah 6:1-2 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. Isaiah 6:3-4 And they were calling to one another: At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory… Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty. See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned 1 Pet 2:24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God. John 12:42,43 1 Kings 18:2-4 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria, and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of his palace. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD. While Jezebel was killing off the Lord's prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.) Are you a “Silent Believer”? Do you need to be outed? John 12:44-5 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. John 12:46 "As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. John 12:47 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. John 12:48 For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say." John 12:49,50
