Pluses of Persecution Develops a Mature Faith Evidence of godly living Heavenly rewards You’re in good company John 16:7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. Attributes of Holy Spirit Another Counselor With us Forever Truth Unknowable by the World With them (in form of Jesus) and will be in them (in form of H.S.) Will teach all things and remind them of Jesus’ Words Attributes of Holy Spirit Convicts (convinces) the World of: Sin Righteousness Judgment Guide you into all Truth Brings Glory to Jesus by revealing Jesus to His disciples John 16:14,15 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. Father’s Words all belongs Jesus’ Words takes from Spirit’s Words gives to US brings glory to gives glory to John 16:16,17 In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me." Some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,' and' Because I am going to the Father'?" Persecution for the Faith (16:1-6) Help of the Holy Spirit (16:7-15) Joy, Access & Peace (16:16-33) What are the rewards for being a Disciple of Jesus? John 16:20 I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. John 16:23 In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. John 16:25-27 "Though I have been speaking figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. In that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. Hebrews 10:16-22 "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Are you using your access to God’s throne? John 16:28-31 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." "You believe at last!" Jesus answered. John 16:32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. John 16:33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." “This is your captain speaking… There’s turbulence up ahead! Fasten your seatbelts!” Are you ready for a rough ride? It comes with flying a lot! Don’t worry, Our Captain’s been through a lot worse… Are you willing to take Jesus at His Word? The High Priestly Prayer Stock Photo of family mother daughter son bed bedroom religious religion What are the rewards for being a Disciple of Jesus? John 18:1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. The Upper Room Thursday Mount of Olives Kidron brook Very last words to His disciples These are His most intimate thoughts Model of what He will be doing for us Why did Jesus do this? A question of Glory (17:1-5) A question of significance (17:6-19) A question of unity (17:20-26) How does one acquire Glory? A question of Glory (17:1-5) I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. John 17:4,5 Word God In the Beginning… {of time} = + = + John 1:1,2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. A question of Glory (17:1-5) Glory = doxa => dokeo = to have an opinion Glory = doxa Orthodox Paradox Heterodox = Right opinion = Different Opinion = Contrary Opinion = to have a High Opinion, praise, honor, renown, good standing How does Jesus give us a “High Opinion” i.e. bring glory to God the Father and God give us a “High Opinion” bring glory to -- Jesus? How can we best bring glory to Jesus and the Father? Imitate Him! WWJD Teach others to imitate Him Encourage those who look like Him How are you doing? That’s my boy! That’s my girl! A question of Glory (17:1-5) A question of significance (17:6-19) "I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. John 17:6,7 What do you give to someone who has everything? God’s best gift He could give His son, was you and me! Does that make you feel significant? God’s gift to His Son! A question of Glory (17:1-5) A question of significance (17:6-19) A question of unity (17:20-26) What are the rewards for being a Disciple of Jesus? I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:22,23 Unity Sameness I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.“ John 17:26 Unity = Same purpose Same Savior If we are not unified as believers… We are defying Jesus’ last specific prayer to the Father for us! Is this the picture Jesus has of you?
