April 25th 2011 James 5 CBS Temple/Belton Evening Class Community Bible Study templebeltonevecbs.org CBS FAITH ALIVE Expectant Living I’m pregnant Expectant Living Expecting His return causes us to… Warn the Wealthy Console the Impatient Pray for the Hurting Recover the Wandering I’m coming soon! James 5 Warnings to the Wealthy Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. James 5:1,2 Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. James 5:3 Genesis 13:2 Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. Job 1:3 and he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys, and had a large number of servants. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East. 1 Kings 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for--both riches and honor--so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. Abraham Job Solomon James 5:4-6 Cheated those who work for you Lived in luxury and self-indulgence Condemned and murdered innocent men Marie Antoinette “let them eat cake!” Naboth’s Vinyard Ahab Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth has cursed both God and the king." So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death. 1 Kings 21:13 $100,000 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9 If you swim with tuna, don’t be surprised if you get caught in their net! For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:10 Matthew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." You can’t take it with you… What’s this we hear about your laying up treasures in heaven?” Consoling the Impatient His return has been delayed Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. James 5:7 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. James 5:8 Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! James 5:9 I hear you two, now cut it out! James 5:10 Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. James 5:11 As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 1 Thessalonians 5:6,7 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 1st Thessalonians 5:8 Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned. I swear I’ll hold it! James 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. I am the way the truth and the life I am the light of the world Praying for the Hurting Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. James 5:13 James 5:14 Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:15,16a And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16b Hebrews 4:15,16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. God's Will Elijah How powerful are your prayers? My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, James 5:19 Recovering the wandering Forgiven.jpg Forgiven remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. James 5:20 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 Time is definitely running out… The King is COMING! Now Live like it! See you again on September 12th, 2011 the Lord willing!!!
