1 John Lesson 6 Chapter 5: 1-21 1 john 30.jpg Victory_in_Jesus_(title).jpg Outline Victory in Jesus! Victory with faith (5:1-5) Victory with confidence (5:6-15) Victory with obedience (5:16-21) christ-is-risen.jpg Victory with faith Key points Our love reveals what we believe Our obedience is evidence of our love Our faith gives us victory over the world faith2.jpg Our love reveals what we believe 1 John 5:1 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. heart-cross.jpg Our obedience is evidence of our love 1 John 5:2-3 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, Gods-will.jpg Matthew 11:28-30 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” 35554_137732566240139_137502462929816_405840_693886_n.jpg Our faith gives us victory over the world 1 John 5:4-5 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. What is faith? Hebrews 11:1 1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. faith.jpg What is the world? The kingdom of Satan Our sinful nature spin.gif satan-by-jack-chick_352143754.jpg sin-picture.jpg Overcoming Satan Ephesians 2:2 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. Overcoming Satan Colossians 1:13 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, Philippians 3:20 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, Our sinful nature Galatians 5:13 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. Our sinful nature Romans 13:14 14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:24-25 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Victory with confidence Key points We have 3 testimonies to who Jesus Christ is Our hearts reveal what we believe We can be confident in God’s promises 10-30-05victory.png We have 3 testimonies 1 John 5:6-8 6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. Why have 3 testimonies? Deuteronomy 19:15 15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. 3 testimonies The water The blood The spirit cover6.jpg The water - Jesus’ baptism Living water Jesus%20Baptism-07.jpg water_living_water_2_2.JPG “Jesus’ baptism” Matthew 3:13-15 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented. “Living water” John 7:38 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” John 10:10 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. The blood - 1 Peter 1:18-19 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. blood-of-Jesus.png The spirit - John 15:26 26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. JESUS_&_HOLY_SPIRIT.jpg How does the spirit testify? Romans 8:15-16 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. “and the three are in agreement” Holy-Spirit-symbol.jpg We also have the testimony of God! 1 John 5:9 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 1 john 1.jpg How did God testify about His Son? At Jesus’ baptism - Matthew 3:16-17 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” JesusBaptism.jpg At the transfiguration - Matthew 17:5 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” carl-bloch-transfiguration.jpg The miracles Jesus performed - John 5:36-38 36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me. 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. jesus-healing2.jpg At Christ’s crucifixion - Matthew 27:45, 50-53 45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. jesus_blood.jpg Matthew 27:54 54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” romancenturion_lg.jpg With the empty tomb - Romans 10:9 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Empty%20Tomb.jpg And the Pharisees tried to prevent it! Matthew 27:62-64 62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” Our hearts reveal what we believe 1 John 5:10 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. b4buw0ro9f0qa3mv_D_0_Love_heart.jpg We can be confident in God’s promises Eternal life When we approach Him gift_of_eternal_life.jpg praying20hands1.jpg Eternal life 1 John 5:11-12 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. When we approach Him 1 John 5:13-15 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. Victory with obedience Key points Pray for believers that sin Benefits of our obedience Keep away from idols eternallife1.jpg Pray for believers that sin 1 John 5:16-17 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. Two kinds of sins - Those the lead to death Those that do not lead to death separation.jpg What kind of death? Spiritual Physical Death.jpg “sins that do not lead to death” over3_brokenlink.jpg Benefits of our obedience 1 John 5:18-19 18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 1 John 5:20 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Benefits: We no longer practice sin God protects us from the evil one We are part of God’s family We are given clearer understanding We have eternal life in Christ Keep away from idols 1 John 5:1-21 21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. 32-goldencalf.jpg 80019_corporate.jpg money.jpg metal-recycle-jewelry.jpg 5122.jpg FancyCarLg.jpg checkbook_cover.jpg We do have Victory in Jesus!
