Recreating the experience that a field trip can bring into the classroom Bring excitement into the online experience Real life field trips are a lot of FUN How can you go on a field trip when you just meet and interact online? First, you need to build an online community who will be comfortable not just working together, but BEING together. How can you go on a fieldtrip when you just meet and interact online? Take a virtual tour of a place of interest and discuss the experience. Students go individually and visit a place of interest then discuss the experience. What applications can web technologies have in education? Extending the classroom environment and creating an e-community for the class. Presenting individual assignments in different formats Share the valuable information embedded in individual assignments. Work as group/online community to disseminate content and create a viable product web site. E-community E-community is a social space used for professional purpose. In Blackboard Vista I create a social space called “Let’s get to know each other” Every student posts a short video clip and a picture taken with Web cameras. Blackboard Vista And here she is: deanna Meet some of my students! How it started As part of learning about Artificial Intelligence I asked my students to go and visit the MIT Museum in Cambridge. They had to choose one piece in the exhibit called Robots and Beyond and discuss the technologies embedded in it, the functionality, applicability etc. They also had to take pictures and/or video clips of the piece they choose. They also had to discuss a piece of their choice in the Holography the Light fantastic. They would get an individual grade for their assignment. Later they will use these assignments to create content for an original web site. Purpose of the project The primary goal was to teach them about implementing Information Systems, more precisely the SDLC process, or Systems Development Life Cycle. The secondary goal was to have them create and implement an Information System of their own. The web site The web site was created following all the steps in the SDLC Systems Development Life Cycle which is a chapter they had to study. The class was split in groups and they were assigned rolls: project managers, creative team, content groups, marketing group etc. Each group had clear obligations and deadlines. E-collaboration has been accomplished by creating an online forum for interaction and discussion. Steps of the process of creating the virtual field trip The project managers were in charge of finding two free domains for creating the web site: they suggested Weebly Google sites The class voted and chose Google sites Next steps The marketing group started research on advertising the site, creating click-stream counters and a blog associated with the site The home page team and the creative team worked on the index page The content groups downloaded all the assignments off Blackboard Vista and checked for accuracy and appearance. They also selected the parts that will be uploaded on the web site. Each individual content group created one virtual exhibit: Robots and Beyond and Holography the light fantastic. Each team “organized” one exhibit. They were also in charge of insuring compatibility (Macs and PCs), functionality for the various media files involved (pictures, video) and efficiency (Uploading times).
