To maintain houses filled with idols, so many live lives of unprecedented busyness. We havemore indulgent time than any generation that has ever come before us. It takes us less time tocook, clean, travel and communicate. Ours is an age of absolute convenience. We can savemore time accomplishing the basic tasks of life than any generation before us, and yet we constantly complain as if we had less time than any of them! Luke 12:15-21 (ESV) 15 And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” 16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” Ecclesiastes 4:6 (ESV) 6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind. Matthew 14:22-23 (ESV) 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, Mark 1:35 (ESV) 35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed. Mark 6:30-32 (ESV) 30 The apostles returned to Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. 31 And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. 32 And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves. Luke 4:42 (ESV) 42 And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place. And the people sought him and came to him, and would have kept him from leaving them, Luke 5:16 (ESV) 16 But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Luke 6:12 (ESV) 12 In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 (ESV) 9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. 2 Thessalonians 3:12 (ESV) 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (ESV) 1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
