Wildwood's Eighth Annual Multicultural Symposium was filled with inspiring performances, provocative thought, self-reflection, and celebration of our multi-dimensional identities.

Children were greeted with trees and new play structures on Wednesday, their first official day at the elementary campus. Big Yard Woods proved to be a huge hit as kids explored the park-like landscape and experimented with the new play structures. The Woods and its companion project, the new outdoor classroom, were completed over the summer as result of the Wildwood Now campaign.

Wildwood 3rd graders got to see democracy in action during their recent visit to the Los Angeles City Hall. It was a fitting end to their study of the Los Angeles area—how and why the city was established and how culturally diverse it is. During their field trip, students learned the meaning behind the art and murals that decorate City Hall. They even got to sit in on part of the Council Chamber presentations.

Fueled by their passion and what they learned in class, Monique's 2nd graders and their Central High School buddies were determined to make everyone aware of food justice in Los Angeles. Together these two groups of students are working to create change in their communities. Check out how they are spreading the word.

Tina Payne Bryson, co-author of the Whole-Brain Child spoke to Wildwood about key strategies for parenting which take into account the specific characteristics of your child or teen's developing mind. These seemingly magical recommendations helped us wrap our own minds around some scientifically based ideas that consider the whole brain perspective, especially by understanding when the right versus the left hemispheres are in strong stages of development, from birth through to the mid-20's.

Wildwood Wolves love to play - and play to win.

Humanities teacher Sara Kaviar has been using Minecraft in her classes as a collaborative design tool for students. Her class recently visited the LA Makerspace to participate in a workshop on 3D printing. The workshop, led by Wildwood science teacher Levi Simons also a founder of the LA Makerspace, was designed to give students an opportunity to design Minecraft objects and print their own detailed 3D object.

The culmination of Spirit Week at the middle and upper campus is Spirit Day at the elementary campus which was held on Friday, Feb. 10 beginning with All School Meeting. Elementary students arrived to a campus transformed: sidewalk areas with freshly chalked Wolf paw prints, banners, a face painting station, bins of blue and white pom poms, tables full of super cool Wildwood Spirit Wear, and much more. Students and parents alike enjoyed an All School Meeting featuring middle and upper school athletes, an appearance by the much anticipated Wolf, and a chance to participate in Wildwood's pre-game team chant. Around 25 athletes stayed for a special sports clinic for 3rd-5th Graders which involved soccer, football, volleyball, and basketball stations. It was a day full of smiles, fun, spirit, and hooowling! Go Wolves!

What do you get when you put a mic in the hands of high schoolers? Feminist radio! Feminist Magazine went on the road back in March and took radio production to Wildwood School’s Multicultural Symposium, a one day conference for youth exploring intersections of identity. And later, spoke to Wildwood students in the studio. Air date: June 11, 2013 on KPFK 90.7 FM. Program from 4:40 min. to 39:25 min.
