Just would like to know how or why did the Ab end up in the Bb scale???

Wow, what a great question! I love it when students are really thinking, which means you have a strong desire to learn. The answer is very simple, it's Mixo-Lydian Mode. This mode is used only with dominant 7 chords and it takes the major scale and lowers its 7. The modal scales came into existance before our current major & minor scales. This study is in our jazz/advanced arranging course. It's Fun isn't it?
