The Mercy, Grace & Longsuffering of God – To begin with, our material talks about how God is described as merciful. And in Exodus 34:6-7, God is describing Himself here, He says, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in the steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin”. And so this is how God is describing Himself to the people Israel. And this description of Him sort of becomes a formula for people to describe God throughout the scriptures and we’ll see that in just a few minutes. This is how God revels Himself to mankind, His mercy, His grace, His steadfast love, and faithfulness. And it says on the second paragraph of this first page, page 83 of lesson 9, It says the English word mercy means a refraining or harming offenders, enemies, or persons in one’s power etc… kindness in excess of what may be expected or demanded by fairness, forbearance and compassion. When we speak of the mercy of God we speak mainly of His compassion or pity on those who are helpless. This word in the New Testament describes the emotional response and resulting in action after encountering the suffering or affliction of one another, to have mercy, be sorry for or have pity. It is used particularly of God’s mercy giving undeserved kindness or forgiveness to those who do not deserve it.
